This 1978 Aston Martin is not exactly what it seems to be. It looks like a Vantage, but technically that is not what it is. Eight of these cars were specially built by order of GT Autos, the Aston Martin distributor in Canada at that time. These cars were equipped with all the Vantage goodies, like a front airdam, fliptail spoiler and the plugged bonnet bulge. The engines, however, were European Stage 1 specification. Four of these cars had manual gearboxes, four were automatic. The cars got the unofficial name ‘Canadian Vantage’.
This example was sold new to a customer in Canada but later it ended up in California. Some owners and a minor restoration later, the car got an engine rebuild. The specifications were converted to six liter ‘big bore’, utilizing authentic Vantage components. The result is a spectacular increase in horsepower and torque. RM Sotheby’s will put this car on the stand at the Monterey auction on August 18.
