There is a new event coming up in the classic car business. Grand Basel Miami Beach will be a spin-off from the famous Art Basel art fairs.
It will be an event where only the top of classic cars will be for sale, for a discerning clientele.
The first edition will be held in Miami Beach in February 2019, but in September 2018 there will be an ‘inaugural show’ in Basel, Switzerland.
Later, Grand Basel will also be held in Hong Kong.
This top-of-the-line auto show will be much more than just an auto show.
There will be 200 ‘masterpiece’ automobiles present, all carefully selected by an advisory committee.
The cars will not only be from the past, but also from the present and from the future.
The event is aimed at “an extensive audience of discerning car collectors and enthusiasts who are eager for a show like no other”, says Mark Backé, Global Director of Grand Basel.
The aim is to show each car as a work of art. Or, as parent company MCH Group says on its website: “as an aesthetic, technological and cultural icon.”
Grand Basel is a spin-off of Art Basel, an art fair that is being held in the Swiss city of Basel since 1970.
It has grown into a yearly meeting point for artists, collectors, dealers and galleries.
Art Basel is also being held in Hong Kong and Miami Beach.
Similar to Art Basel, Grand Basel will be a place for the absolute top of collectors, dealers and experts.
What makes the show even more interesting, is that the cars in the show can be sold. Investors, looking for blue-chip automobiles, can find what they are looking for here.
But not any car dealer can bring in just any car. According to Bloomberg, brokers and dealers can only bring their cars in by invitation.

The new event is being endorsed by celebrities around the world. One of them is British actor and DJ Idris Elba. To promote the new event, he made a short film about his search for the ‘soul’ of a car. In this movie, he drives a 1978 Lancia Sibilo, a car that was designed by Marcello Gandini of Studio Bertone. But he also drives the very modern 2015 Zagato Mostro.
